The Secretariat of the National Committee\u00a0 for the UNESCO Memory of the World\u00a0 Program, headquartered in the International\u00a0 Affairs Department of the NLAI, has been\u00a0 engaged in extensive activities during the\u00a0 current year to promote the objectives of the\u00a0 UNESCO Program in Iran. The UNESCO\u00a0 Program, launched in 1992, was geared to\u00a0 safeguarding the documentary heritage of\u00a0 humanity against collective amnesia, neglect,\u00a0 the ravages of time and climatic conditions,\u00a0 and willful and deliberate destruction. The\u00a0 Program has since endeavored to encourage\u00a0 and promote enhanced preservation of\u00a0 and access to documentary heritage through\u00a0 raising global public awareness of the significance\u00a0 of such a heritage in safeguarding the\u00a0 civilization and culture of nations.<\/p>\n
The Program\u00a0 has played a catalytic role in drawing\u00a0 attention to the significance of this heritage\u00a0 through registering recognized documentary\u00a0 heritage of the world in global, regional, and\u00a0 national lists. Iran Joined the Program in 2007\u00a0 and has so far managed to register 11 works\u00a0 in the global list, 4 works in the regional\u00a0 list, and over 50 works in the national list.\u00a0 In organizing training workshops in various\u00a0 provinces across the country, the Secretariat\u00a0 has endeavored in its outreach activities\u00a0 to highlight the importance of conservation\u00a0 and accessibility of documents, manuscripts\u00a0 and historical texts for the concerned institutions,\u00a0 groups, entities, and citizens across the\u00a0 country. Thus far in the year, four training\u00a0 workshops have been held in the Provinces\u00a0 of Fars, Hamedan, Kurdistan, and Lorestan.<\/p>\n
In these workshops, attended by interested\u00a0 librarians, museum experts, scholars of history\u00a0 and archeology, and collection holders,\u00a0 the members of the National Committee address\u00a0 a range of relevant themes and issues.\u00a0 They include: the importance of recognizing\u00a0 and preserving the documentary heritage,\u00a0 especially the hidden documentary heritage\u00a0 at the risk of destruction; education of the\u00a0 methods of preservation of heritage; development\u00a0 of the relevant criteria for identification,\u00a0 recognition and preservation; and accessibility\u00a0 of the preserved heritage. The training\u00a0 workshops in provinces have also served\u00a0 the purpose of providing the members of the\u00a0 National Committee with the opportunity of\u00a0 close and on-site familiarity with the provincial\u00a0 libraries and their respective collections\u00a0 as well as with the actual conditions of\u00a0 preservation of documents and manuscripts.<\/p>\n
In light of the National Committee\u2019s\u00a0 oversight function in Iran with regard to\u00a0 the UNESCO Memory of the World Program,\u00a0 the Committee has held joint meetings\u00a0 with the experts from Golestan Palace\u00a0 Museum, Malek National Museum and\u00a0 Library (associated with the Foreign Ministry),\u00a0 and Shahid Motahhari School on the\u00a0 state of conservation of the works already\u00a0 registered with the UNESCO Program. The\u00a0 Baysonghor Shahnameh, Khamseh of Nezami,\u00a0 Jami\u2019 al-Tawarikh, and Zakhireye Khwarazmshahi\u00a0 are the works registered in the\u00a0 UNESCO global list and kept in these centers.<\/p>\n
In pursuance of its current activities, the\u00a0 Secretariat of the National Committee is\u00a0 planning to hold similar training workshops\u00a0 during the coming months in the Provinces\u00a0 of Sistan and Baluchistan, Mazandaran,\u00a0 and Ilam, as well as in such important centers\u00a0 in the field of documentary heritage as\u00a0 Ministry of Petroleum, Ministry of Culture\u00a0 and Islamic Guidance, and the Office\u00a0 of Charities and Religious Endowments.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
