Artificial intelligence (AI), as a transformative technology, is rapidly advancing in various domains, including library services. This session will explore the different dimensions of implementing AI in public libraries, analyzing its necessities, challenges, and the infrastructure required for the future.

Necessities:

Public libraries, as hubs of information and culture, face an increasing volume of information and diverse user needs. AI can enhance information retrieval processes, personalize services, and offer recommendations based on user preferences. Specifically, the use of Chatbots and virtual assistants can facilitate user interaction with libraries and improve access to resources. Additionally, AI can assist librarians in analyzing data to identify usage patterns and improve services accordingly.

Challenges:

Despite its significant advantages, implementing AI in public libraries comes with challenges. One of the major concerns is related to user data privacy and security. Moreover, the lack of technical skills among library staff, especially in emerging technologies, can hinder the full utilization of AI. Financial investments required for acquiring, maintaining, and upgrading AI technologies and the necessary infrastructure pose another significant challenge for libraries.

Future Infrastructure:

For successful AI implementation, public libraries require advanced and reliable IT infrastructure. This includes data management systems, AI software, and suitable hardware. Continuous training for staff in new technologies and AI is also essential. Inter-institutional collaborations and the establishment of scientific networks can facilitate the exchange of experiences and best practices, helping libraries overcome challenges.

This session provides an opportunity for researchers, librarians, IT specialists, and information science professionals to exchange views on the future of AI in public libraries. The goal of the session is to identify practical solutions to address challenges and leverage opportunities in this field. Given the rapid advancements in AI and the growing needs of users, these discussions can help shape a sustainable and effective future for public libraries.

The session will be moderated by Dr. Hossein Zadeh.
